Took keen hold - in rear - not fluent 3rd - headway and went fourth before 2 out - kept on well home straight - never near to challenge (enq held into the running and riding of the gelding - which was held up in the rear of the field before being asked for an effort from approaching 2 out to finish fourth of eight runners beaten 25 3/4l. Jockey stated that his instructions were to drop the gelding in to help him settle as he had run too free on his previous runs. Jockey explained that after jumping off - the gelding became lit up and keen as another runner who was also running free had sat on his girths. Jockey added that as the race developed three of the runners went off at a strong gallop leaving the rest of the field slightly detached. Jockey said that the gelding had continued to run keen - a fact he reported at scales - and jump novicey throughout the first circuit. He explained that as the field headed down the back straight - he began asking his mount to improve on the leaders - he further added that the gelding was plugging on one paced in the home straight without making any ground on the winner or second and was only gaining on the third placed runner who he believed had weakened significantly in the straight. Jockey felt confident that his mount had obtained the best possible placing in the circumstances. Trainer confirmed the instructions and that he was satisfied with the ride)(op 300/1)
